The Vince Lombardi Trophy, also known simply as the Lombardi Trophy or just the Lombardi, is the trophy awarded each year to the winning team of the National Football League's championship game, the Super Bowl. The trophy is named in honor of NFL coach Vince Lombardi, who led the Green Bay Packers to victories in the first two Super Bowl games. [1] The New York Giants' recent woes have made it somewhat difficult for many to remember just how fantastic the franchise did to win four Super Bowl rings in five trips, starting with the 1986 NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell presents the Lombardi Trophy to the New York Giants after their 21-17 victory over the New England Patriots. Incidentally, the Giants and Patriots had also faced each other in New York during the regular season prior to Super Bowl XLII with the Patriots winning that regular season matchup and the Giants going on to win that Super Bowl.
